Faith Academy football focuses on winning homecoming game

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team welcomes San Marcos Hill Country to Britton Field on the Faith campus as its homecoming opponent.
The contest kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15.
“They’re a good team,” Flames head coach John Hallam said. “They’re undefeated. They’ll be a challenge.”
It’s been two weeks since the Flames (2-1, Division II, District 3 of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) played a game. Smoking for Jesus forfeited last week, citing a lack of players. Faith defeated Waco Texas Wind 48-40 Sept. 1.
But the Flames made good use of their unexpected open week. Hallam said they enjoyed an intersquad scrimmage Sept. 7, and the Flames participated in a weight lifting session Sept. 8.
“Which helped us a lot,” he said of the scrimmage. “It forced the younger guys to be in position to make plays. We did a lot of offensive reps. This week I’m feeling really good about where we’re at with the quarterbacks. They’re grasping things a lot better and seeing things on the field. We got a lot accomplished.”
Therefore, the Flames are eager to return to the field against a San Marcos team (2-0, TAPPS Division III, District) 4) that has crushed Prairie Lea 46-0 in a mercy-ruled contest and Bellville Faith Academy 82-42 Sept. 1.
The Rams lean heavily on their quarterback to make plays by either completing passes or by running with the football for first downs. Hill Country lists three: Thomas Hamilton, Troy Wilks who is also a running back and defensive end, and Ben Walton, who also lines up at center.
“They run a diamond-type concept with run-pass options with a deep (running back),” Hallam said. “They look like they have talent and size. They spread the field and the quarterback makes good decisions. He’s a dual athlete, which challenges the defense to bring him down.”
Defensively, the Rams are “big and physical,” Hallam said.
The Flames will counter with Carter Fromberg, Zane Lewis, Nash Renfro, Cross Sanchez, Ian Smiles, Beau Steele and Karter Van Gundy,
Hallam, who is in his first year with the Flames, didn’t sit at home the night of Sept. 8. He was back at his old stomping grounds at Austin Veritas to scout. He watched Pasadena First Baptist Christian defeat Veritas 52-6. Hallam was on the Veritas staff.
“We play Veritas in two weeks and possibly Pasadena in the playoffs,” he said.
